Short answer: the UPSC photo is a recent colour JPG of 20–200 KB on a white background, with the face covering three quarters of the photo. The signature is one JPG of 20–100 KB showing three signatures in black ink, one below the other. Apply on upsconline.nic.in by 2 Oct 2026, 6 PM.

Take a recent colour photo against a plain white wall, face straight on, both ears visible, face filling about 3/4 of the frame.

Sign three times, one below the other, in black ink on white paper, and take a clear photo or scan of it.

Why UPSC photo & signature uploads get rejected
- Face covers less than 3/4 of the photo, or is too close with the ears cut off.
- Dark or patterned background, shadows on the face, or glare on spectacles.
- Dark glasses, uniform, or hair covering the eyes.
- Photo signed by the candidate, or not matching the live photo taken later.
- Signature image with only one signature instead of three, or not in black ink.
- Photo above 200 KB or signature above 100 KB straight from a phone camera.
UPSC online photo & signature: frequently asked questions
What is the UPSC online application photo size?
A recent colour JPG between 20 KB and 200 KB, on a plain white background, with your face covering about three quarters of the photo and both ears visible. Do not sign the photo. UPSC gives no pixel size, so this tool outputs a 600 × 600 px JPG inside the 20–200 KB window.
What is the UPSC signature size and why three signatures?
UPSC asks you to sign three times, one below the other, in black ink on plain white paper, and upload it as one JPG of 20–100 KB and 350–500 pixels. This tool fits the image to 400 × 500 px and keeps it between 20 and 100 KB.
Does the UPSC photo have to be square?
The official advertisement and UPSC's photo instructions do not require a square photo or give a pixel size. The rules that matter are the 20–200 KB size, the JPG format, a white background and the face covering three quarters of the frame. A square 600 × 600 px photo meets all of them.

Why does UPSC reject photos?
UPSC's instructions list a face covering less than three quarters of the photo, a misaligned, blurred or too-close face, ears cut off, a dark background, shadows, glare, dark glasses, hair over the eyes, a signed photo, and a live photo that does not match the uploaded one.
What other documents does UPSC ask for?
At registration: a photo ID card as a JPG (20–200 KB) and your 10th certificate as a PDF (50–300 KB). In the application: a separate PDF for each claim (date of birth, category, qualification, experience). Do not upload pay slips, resumes or unsigned experience letters.
